LUCK IS NOT A SCHOOL SECURITY PROGRAM

TASA ID: 915

Not a week goes by without yet another security breach report involving a K-12 school, the details surrounding such events as sexual assault, knife attacks, social media threats, guns carried onto school property or an actual shooting.  These reports are from every part of the country.

What is interesting when these events are reported is the often issued comment of a school administrator?  The common response is “we are looking at our security to improve or upgrade our security practices.”

How many more events which threat the safety of K-12 students, staff and visitors must be experienced before school districts and/or school administrators recognize that the school security program is as important as every other operational component of their organization.  It appears that all too often the security program is reviewed in hindsight, that is, after an event has already occurred.

As unbelievable as it sounds, the premise that “it wouldn’t happen here” is still the mantra for many K-12 educational organizations.  This results in positioning schools to be easy targets for individuals who wish to do harm.

Schools, regardless of their affiliation or environment, must insure they have established a holistic school security program which is deeply imbedded into the daily routines of the organization.  Such programs should be reviewed regularly and be used to educate students, staff and parents as to the part they must play in keeping their schools safe.
