This is a follow-up to my July 2016 white paper entitled, “A Case Study of Patent Abuse: Printing Industry Faces New Nemesis Impacting Growth and Employment—Patent Trolls.”

That white paper received enormous industry press coverage, and to my understanding was used as part of court proceedings resulting in the dismissal of two long and visible printing industry cases brought on by patent trolls, CTP Innovations (CTP) and High Quality Printing Innovations (HQPI). However, since then, two new cases emerged by patent trolls attempting to threaten and extort funds from printing industry companies and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) using standard technology common for doing day-to-day business in the printing and related industries.

Every business today, no matter its size or type, faces very real security risks. Risks that can cost you time, money and even legal problems. While most companies are aware of cybersecurity issues, there are other real threats, many of them hidden, that must be considered when planning your corporate security initiatives. These include not only the obvious ones like workplace violence, but physical security, health and other hidden hazards, and even work stoppage issues like political upheavals or localized violence. All are very real risks that should not be overlooked.

It’s been awhile since we checked in on general building contractor finances. The best data comes from the annual Construction Financial Management Association annual report, now called the Benchmarker. They survey most financially sound builders each year, and provide data that the builders themselves can use to gauge their progress versus their peers. The last time we did this was in 2013, so we will be seeing what has happened in the last three years as the market and the economy have improved.

If I were charged with the task of hiring a fire investigator for my company or firm, I would start out looking for individuals that have aspired to better themselves through education and have attained certifications. But there is more to the process than just earning a piece of paper in 40 hours. I would need to evaluate each person’s experience. It seems it would be a better business decision to hire a company or individual with credentials AND experience to handle my potential subrogation case.
